Ontario (Sloop of war) logbook, 1816-1817.

The logbook or naval cruising journal of the sloop of war Ontario details a patrol in the Mediterranean, with numerous stops at the shipping ports of Mahon, Barcelona, Cadiz and Malaga, Spain; Tripoli; the Gulf of Tunis; the Bay of Gibraltar; the Bay of Naples; and Palermo, returning to New York via Hampton Roads, Va., and Annapolis, from July 1816 to April 1817. The commander was John Downes; the logbook keeper was Jesse Smith. The logbook includes details of accidents to sailors on board, including their wounds and injuries; a burial at sea; several deaths, including a suicide; the naval desertion of sailors; one instance of the stranding of a ship (running aground); pilots and pilotage; and the rescue work to retrieve a sailor who fell overboard. The logbook illustration is a diagram of the order of the squadron.
